Argument (No.34)

The conclusion of the suggestion from the business manager of Monarch Books is that opening a cafe would help them attract more customers and make them better capable of competing with Regal Books. However, I find this proposal to be questionable for the following reasons.

First of all, the director claims that Regal Books recently opened a cafe in its store. This act made the manager of Monarch Books want to do the same thing. But it is unconvincing that Regal Books is more popular than before. Even if they do very well after they have a cafe, it not necessarily means the outcome would be exactly the same for Monarch Books as well.

Second, the director points out that opening the cafe would clearly attract customers. But I think it is not true always. One reason is that the two bookstores are located at the different places. People who live around Monarch Books may not really in the habit of having a coffee and some desserts while reading books in the bookstores. Moreover, because Monarch Books is well known for its wide selection of books on all subjects, lots of people may probably go there to buy books rather than to stay for a cup of coffee.

Lastly, setting up a cafe in the store can not guarantee a boost to (an increase in) the sales of its books. The quality of their drink and food would be a more important factor in determining whether they can attract more customers or not.

Taken together, the argument that Monarch Books opening a cafe would attract more people to come and better compete with Regal Books is not well-reasoned. (Thank Alec for revising)
